4140 steel is a common chromium-molybdenum alloy steel accding to AISI/ASTM standard.Similar to grade 4130 but the carbon content is a little higher,which gives AISI 4140 steel greater strength and heat treatment capabilities than AISI 4130. At the hardness of HRC18-22,4140 alloy steel can be machined well. SAE 4140 steel also has high hardenability and good toughness.

6.AISI 4140 Steel Applications
AISI 4140 alloy steel is a good material for gears, piston pins, crankshafts,and shafts.It is also used in the oil and gas industry,gear, supercharger drive gear, rear axle, the load of connecting rod.Examples of applications for SAE 4140 steel also includes structural tubing,connection rods, stem assemblies, tool holders. Typical applications include connection rods, collets, conveyor pins, gears,and tool holders.
1)Preheat 4140 alloy steel uniformly and slowly;
2)Increase the forging temperature up to 1180°C.
3)Always keep the forging temperature of AISI 4140 above 850°C
1)Heating AISI 4140 forged steel slowly to the temperature 840-880°C;
2)SAE 4140 alloy steel should be quenched in the oil;
3)Heat the steel to the temperature around 580°C;
4)Soak at this temperature for 2 hours per 25mm of total thickness;
5)4140 steel can be cooled in air or inside the furnace;
6)Quenched and tempered and after stress relieved.
After QT,a straightening process is necessary then the products should be tempered and distorsion-poor annealed.
1)Heat AISI 4140 alloy steel slowly and thoroughly to 800-850°C;
2)Cool slowly in the furnace to the temperature about 500°C;
3)Complete annealing the 4140 steel in the air.
1)Increase the temperature of 4140 alloy steel to 860-880°C;
2)Cool 4140 steel down to room temperature(20°C) in the air.
