4340 steel is a general nickel-molybdenum alloy steel as per AISI/ASTM American standard.It has high strength,toughness and excellent hardenability. SAE 4340 can be widely used in the manufacture of the camshaft and connecting rod of engine parts,poor processability,belongs to the typical difficult-to-machine materials.

4340 steel is often used in the manufacture of shaft under high load, such as connecting rod structure.It is also made the surface is hard wear-resisting and heart of flexible components, such as gear,engine camshaft and connecting rod parts.
7.AISI 4340 Steel Forging
1)Preheat 4340 steel bars uniformly and slowly;
2)Raise the forging temperature up to 1150-1200°C;
3)Keep the forging temperature above 850°C.
Hardening&Tempering(quenched and tempered and after stress relieved)
1)Heating 4340 steel uniformly to 850°C;
2)AISI 4340 alloy steel should be quenched in the oil;
3)Heat the material to the temperature 550°C;
4)Soak at this temperature for at least 2 hours;
5)Cool SAE 4340 alloy steel in the furnace.
In case after QT a straightening process is necessary then the products should be tempered and distorsion-poor annealed with at least more than 625°C.
1)Heating sae 4340 steel round bars thoroughly to 800-850°C;
2)Cool slowly down to the temperature 550°;
3)Complete annealing the steel in the air.
1)Heat 4340 steel up to the temperature 850°C;
2)Then cool down to the room temperature(20°C).
