M42 High Speed Steel
M42 HSS is a cobalt-molybdenum high speed steel with an additional 8% cobalt.It achieves a higher hardness and superior red-hardness compared to more conventional high-speed steels.The hardness can up to 70HRC in the high heat treated.M42 also offers excellent cutting performance and excellent wear resistance.It is less prone to chipping when used for interrupted cuts and costs less when compared to the same tool made of carbide.M42 high speed steel is often identified by HSS-Co.

1)M42 is widely used in metal manufacturing;
2)Mainly used in kinds of cutting tool which has a strict demand for hot hardness,including twist drills,broaches,milling cutters,reamers and bandsaw blades.
3)M42 high-speed steel is a great quality wear resistant grade for cold-work applications.
1)Preheat M42 high-speed steel uniformly and slowly to 650-760°C;
2)Increase the forging temperature to 1010-1150°C and equalise;
3)Hold the M42 HSS forging temperature above 980°C;
4)M42 high speed tool steel should be cooled very slowly after forging.
M42 is usually annealed after hot working and re annealing will be necessary if M42 tool steel has been hot worked, forged, or hardened.Increase the temperature of M42 high speed steel to 850°C at a rate of Max220°C per hour.Hold at the temperature for one hour per 25mm of thickness and then furnace cool slowly. The annealed hardness achieved should be Max269 Brinell or lower.
Hardening(in a vacuum or controlled furnace, or salt bath)
1)Pre heat M42 high speed steel to 820-870°C ;
2)Transfer to the high temperature salt bath or furnace;
3)Heating the hardening temperature to 1160-1250°C;
4)Hardened from the range of 1160-1180°C in salt, or 1180-1190°C in atmosphere or vacuum furnaces;
5)Hold at the hardening temperature;
6)Quench M42 tool steel without further soaking into salt or warm oil at 540-595°C;
7)Complete the M42 HSS quench in still air.
1)M42 high speed steel should be tempered between 510-595°C;
2)Temper M42 HSS immediately after quenching;
3)Triple tempering is recommended with a minimum of two hours at temperature per cycle;
4)Cooled M42 tool steel in the air to room temperature between tempering treatments.
