What is High Speed Steel
High speed steel is also known as HSS steel.It can remain sclerosis and very sharp even in the air cooling. It is a kind of complicated composition of alloy steel, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, cobalt carbide forming elements, etc. Alloying elements amounted to about 10 ~ 25%.
High-Speed Steel can still maintain a high hardness(in more than 60 HRC)under the condition of high speed cutting produce heat (500 ℃). This is the most main features of high speed steel, red hardness.And carbon tool steel after quenching and low temperature tempering, although have very high hardness at room temperature, but when the temperature higher than 200 ℃, the hardness and fell sharply in the 500 ℃ the degree of hardness was similar to annealing state, completely lost the ability of cutting metal, this limits the carbon tool steel manufacture cutting tools. And high speed steel with good red hardness, make up for the fatal defects of carbon tool steel, can be used to make cutting tools.
High speed tool steel heat treatment process is relatively complex, must after quenching, tempering and a series of process. Because of its poor thermal conductivity when quenching generally divided into two phases. In 800 ~ 850 ℃ preheat, lest cause large thermal stress), and then quickly add heat to the quenching temperature 1190 ~ 1190 ℃ (different type when using the actual temperature difference), after the oil cooling or air cooling or cooling gas. Factory all use salt heating furnace, vacuum furnace is widely used now. After quenching due to internal organization retain part (about 30%) retained austenite into martensite, affect the performance of high speed steel. As the transformation of retained austenite, further improve the hardness and wear resistance, generally for 2 ~ 3 times of tempering, the tempering temperature 560 ℃, heat preservation for 1 hour at a time.
